Just after the square where the market normally is placed in Vittoriosa/Rabat (Gozo) there is a small entrance to one of the best restaurants I have ever visited in Rabat. If you are passing by car you might not see it as there is only a glass door with a red sign “Maji Wine & Dine” almost in front of Jubilee. There is an illuminated staircase exactly as you open the door which is warmly decorated with wine bottles and wine themed decorations appropriate for its genre.
Once at the first floor you have a small lounge area which is the hub to either the wine bar or the restaurant. The place is a converted town house and the way it was designed is just perfect. Both Wine and restaurant areas are not big; in fact they are standard old Gozitan style sized rooms. Both areas are set up to provide seclusion and privacy as all the tables are well apart from each other and are nicely decorated.
The patron (Michael Buhagiar) is one of a kind. He is friendly, devoted, outgoing and without even talking to him you take the impression that you can totally trust him. He will most certainly be the person that will greet you as soon as you enter the place and will be buzzing around making sure that every client is given all the deserved attention and is completely satisfied.
Wine List is nicely set and there is quite an exhaustive list of wines to choose from. It is split by region as in most other fine dining restaurants and has a good selection of New World wines apart from the all famous local, French and Italian Wines. Apart from the specials the Menu has a good selection, just the amount to satisfy all categories (meat, poultry, fish). The combination of ingredients in each dish provides that particular taste which makes each meal delightful.
I had the opportunity to go 4 times till now (once at the wine bar and the rest at the restaurant) and I can tell you I was never disappointed. One of which was the last year’s New Year’s Eve dinner, which was incredibly nice. We actually made the Countdown and most of the night there as after dinner Mr.Buhagiar provided a small ‘party’ with champagne and complimentary drinks for the celebrations and we really loved the atmosphere.
Obviously on different occasions 🙂 I tried the fish (as always I forgot the name), duck (amazingly tender) and the Angus Rib Eye —— delicious !!!
Overall Rating: the place was superb; service is excellent, wine selection is good and menu is well balanced. Quality of the food is very good and the price is adequate for what you are being served. All in all a must go restaurant.
